10 Tips on Making Room for Life

  1. Proximity is a big factor of friendship and community. If you can locate near your friends and church, you will have a much higher chance of forming relationships that will last and be fruitful.
  2. Balance the three main areas of your life: work, relationships, and sleep. In order to be a good friend/spouse/parent and a good employee, it is important to have balance in those main areas of your life. Having these three areas balanced allow for you to live in the tempo God created and have time for relationships.
  3. Our children are losing in big ways because we do not make time in our lives for them and we over-schedule them. Two of the ways we are losing are in lost finances and lost family meals. Scaling back on the activities your children are involved in will make more room for life.
  4. Americans work too much. Whether you work eight, ten, or twelve hours you still have only an average of four hours worth of productive labor. So, we should try to consolidate our four hours of effective work into the tightest framework we can.
  5. Cut the amount of time you spend commuting. Living near your workplace and your children’s schools opens up much more time to spend developing relationships.
  6. Trade results for flexibility. If you deliver results, your boss will be willing to offer flexibility.
  7. Outsource certain tasks. Every person or household has some tasks that eat up precious time that could easily and affordably be outsourced. Spend the few extra dollars to hire out the lawn care or the household cleaning that eats away the time you have with others.
  8. Learn to be more efficient. Efficiency will save every individual time and allow time to make room for life: simply make a list of the things you do, and seek to find a more efficient way to do it.
  9. Remember the family meal? Everyone would gather to eat dinner together and share about their day? That is lost in today’s society, and having the family mealtime back in the schedule will allow for time to maintain and strengthen the family relationships.
  10. Make use of open time. When one has open time, don’t waste it. Play a game with family and friends, sit in the front yard, take a walk and visit your neighbors, or play music together as a family.
